Herbalism — the study and use of plants for health — can be beneficial for a mix of practical, intellectual, and personal reasons.
During our workshops, we will explore the herbs and plants you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet. In addition, we will discuss plants you might come across on your daily walks. The good news is that many common "weeds" — dandelion, chickweed, plantain, elderflower — are edible and or have traditional medicinal uses.
Taking the time to learn about the herbs and wild plants around you has many positive effects like mindfulness and stress reduction.
Our workshops are designed to help you develop a deeper connection with nature and become more aware of the environment. In addition, they foster a sense of peace and relaxation.
For example, designing and brewing herbal tea is a slow, tactile, and grounding experience that counterbalances a fast, screen-heavy life.
A big part of herbalism is knowing what not to do and learning about plant toxicity and dangerous look-alikes. That knowledge protects you and it is imperative to know a few cautions before exploring the botanical world:
-
Many toxic plants look like harmless edibles (e.g., poison hemlock vs. wild carrot, foxglove vs. comfrey). Knowing what you're looking at is crucial to your safety.
-
Overconfidence is the biggest risk. Start by mastering a few common species rather than trying to know everything at once.
-
Learn only from reliable guides or local experts, use multiple sources, and never eat wild plants unless you're certain.
-
Remember, never consume anything you can't identify 100%
